DigitalPersona Use and Maintenance Guide for Swipe Readers

January 23rd, 2010 admin No comments

Achieving optimal fingerprint recognition accuracy depends on:

  • Proper use of the fingerprint reader during fingerprint enrollment and user authentication.
  • Regular maintenance of the fingerprint reader.

Warning

To protect against the risk of bodily injury, fire, or damage to the fingerprint reader:

  • Do not submerge the fingerprint reader in liquid.
  • Do not spray liquid on the fingerprint reader or allow liquid to drip inside.
  • Do not use the fingerprint reader if it has incurred damage, such as a cracked or frayed cord or a broken connector.

Using the Fingerprint Reader

For comfort and reliability, it is recommended that you use the index finger of either hand. To ensure proper use of the fingerprint reader when enrolling your fingerprints or when authenticating yourself using the fingerprint reader, perform the following steps:

Swipe Use

  1. Place the first knuckle of your index finger over the horizontal sensor bar, as shown in the picture above.
  2. Pull your finger straight toward you, using moderate pressure and speed. The pad of your finger should make full contact with the sensor bar during the swipe and should remain centered (not too far left or too far right). To maintain full contact with the sensor bar, you should pull you whole arm toward you rather than flicking your finger.
  3. The DigitalPersona software will notify you if the scan was successful or if you need to swipe your finger again.

If the DigitalPersona software does not authenticate you after several attempts, try re-enrolling your fingerprint.

Cleaning the Fingerprint Reader

The condition of the fingerprint reader affects its ability to obtain a good quality scan of a fingerprint.

Clean Swiper

Occasionally, you may see a message advising you to clean the fingerprint reader. If you do, simply wipe the sensor bar with a dry or slightly damp tissue or with a cotton swab, as shown in the picture above.

Notes

DigitalPersona supports multiple types of fingerprint readers; however, during fingerprint enrollment, you must use the same fingerprint reader for all required scans.

The fingerprint reader is intended for home or office use only.

Use and Maintenance Guide for the DigitalPersona U.are.U Fingerprint Reader

What is Fingerprint Logon?

Fingerprint logon is simple, fast, and secure. First you “register” one or more of your fingerprints. The system saves enough unique information about your fingerprint to create a template so that a fingerprint reader can later identify you. Your actual fingerprint is not stored, and your actual fingerprint cannot be reconstructed from the template that is created and stored.

When you want to log on, you touch the fingerprint reader and your fingerprint is compared to the template that was created during the registration process. If there is enough matching information, you are authenticated and logged on. If there is not enough matching information, the system will not verify you or log you on.

How Does Fingerprint Logon Work?

DigitalPersona fingerprint recognition application software does not store a copy of your fingerprint. Instead, it makes a map of 25 to 40 unique features of your fingerprint and then puts it into a data format called a template. The template can only be interpreted by our biometric engine. If one were to look at the template of a fingerprint, it would not be recognizable, as the information is a set of numbers and is typically encrypted.

Taking Care of Your Fingerprint Reader

The fingerprint reader, while tolerant of residues left on the reader, performs optimally when kept clean!

How to Clean the U.are.U Fingerprint Reader

  • Apply the sticky side of a piece of adhesive cellophane tape to the window, and then peel it away, OR
  • Gently dab the fingerprint reader window with a cloth that has been dampened with a mild ammonia-based glass cleaner, such as Windex. (Do not use paper!)

Clean Reader

Protect Against the Risk of Damage to Your Fingerprint Reader

  • Do not pour any liquid directly on the reader window.
  • Do not use alcohol-based cleaners.
  • Never submerge the reader in liquid.
  • Never rub the window with an abrasive material, including paper.
  • Do not poke the window coating with your fingernail or any other item, such as a pen.

Proper Use of Your Fingerprint Reader

Most of the unique, repeatable fingerprint information is located in the “pad” of your finger, not in the “tip”. Flat finger placement as shown below will result in fast and accurate fingerprint authentication.
